Washington Opens Direct Talks with Myanmar's Military-Backed Government

The Trump administration has opened direct talks with Myanmar's military-backed government, Reuters reports, citing US officials and other informed sources. The contacts shift Washington's approach after years of efforts to isolate the generals following the 2021 coup.

Michael Vance, the US assistant secretary of state for intelligence and research, has played a central role. He joined meetings with Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyitaw on September 15 and 16. Securing American businessman Adam Castillo's release was one objective, while the encounter created room for further dialogue.

A major focus is closing scam operations in Myanmar that target Americans. Sources told Reuters that the FBI has already contacted the country's authorities directly about cyber fraud.

Discussions have also addressed heavy rare-earth deposits as Washington seeks alternative supply sources. Access is complicated because many deposits lie in territory controlled by ethnic armed groups.

US sanctions against Min Aung Hlaing remain in place. The State Department says engagement with the authorities does not replace contact with other groups or its calls to end violence and release political prisoners.
